Calculators

Decreases and increases

Tell Tricotta how many stitches you start with, how many you end with and in how many rows. You get every step, and the rows on which you decrease or increase. The second calculator spreads the increases or decreases across one row, after a rib or before a border.

Along a side, over several rows

Machine knitters know this calculation as the magic formula. Stitches and rows come from your gauge.

You decrease 15 stitches on each side, over 80 rows.

  1. Decrease 1 stitch every 5 rows, 10 times.
  2. Decrease 1 stitch every 6 rows, 5 times.

Rows on which you decrease: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 56, 62, 68, 74, 80

In one row

After the rib, or before a border, the stitches to add or take away are spread evenly across the row.

From 80 stitches to 96, with 16 increases spread across the row.

  1. work 5 stitches, increase 1
  2. work 4 stitches, increase 1
  3. work 5 stitches, increase 1× 2
  4. work 4 stitches, increase 1
  5. work 5 stitches, increase 1× 3
  6. work 4 stitches, increase 1
  7. work 5 stitches, increase 1× 2
  8. work 4 stitches, increase 1
  9. work 5 stitches, increase 1× 2
  10. work 4 stitches, increase 1
  11. work 5 stitches, increase 1
  12. work 5 stitches

Increase after these stitches, counting from one edge: 5, 9, 14, 19, 23, 28, 33, 38, 42, 47, 52, 56, 61, 66, 70, 75

By hand, a decrease is two stitches worked together, and an increase is a stitch made between two stitches. On the machine, you move one stitch onto the next needle to decrease, and you free a needle by moving the stitches outward to increase.

Tricotta works out whole garments for your size and your machine, with every decrease already in place. For now the application is by invitation.
